The Art of Action Fiction: Writing Under Hypnosis
Derrick Ferguson (author of the awesome Dillon series) and I have several times had the conversation about how we get into a writer's trance when writing. What is the writer's trance, you might ask? It's that mental head-space where words start to flow for the author and the story seems to start telling itself or (as author Robert E Howard put it) when it seems that the protagonist of your story is standing at your shoulder and telling it to you as you put it to paper. It's that golden time where the author doesn't have to struggle for the words and they seem to drop like manna from heaven to sprinkle the pages of your manuscript.
Derrick's wife, Patricia, as an observer of Derrick falling into the writer's trance became convinced that Derrick was using a form of self-hypnosis to put himself into this golden creative state. At first I wasn't sure what to make of this observation, but as I've considered it I have become convinced that Patricia was not at all mistaken.
When I'm at my most productive I am able to shut out all outside distractions and I mentally become enveloped in the story that I am telling. At this point the words seem to flow out of me and I'm not sitting in front of my word processor, I'm completely absorbed in some fantastic world of my own creation.
Most websites that discuss hypnosis and writing speak of utilizing hypnosis as a tool to help writers overcome their writers block, but I'm more concerned with the direct application of hypnosis to stimulate the creativity of a writer that's already writing. There may be some natural ability instinctive to some writers that allow them to fall into this hypnotic state, but there are a couple of methods and tools that I find helpful for bringing me into The Zone.
1) Ritual: If you repeat certain actions before writing you may find that you are more mentally prepared for reaching The Zone. This may include enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or a good stretch or maybe reviewing a few paragraphs of your story. It also might be helpful to write at a particular time every day, so that you become conditioned to falling into a state of self-hypnosis at that time during the day.
2) Leave it in the Middle of the Action: When I'm finishing up my daily writing I'm always tempted to speed through the action and end it at a point where I'm not sure, yet, where the story is going. If you leave off your writing in the middle of something where you still have ample inspiration, it makes getting into your next day of writing much easier.
3) Music: I've got a wide variety of music available on my computer and I like to shuffle it while I write. I find that this is an immense help for quickly drawing me into the story and getting me into that state of self-hypnosis. However, this can cut both ways. I am a musician and if I play the music too loudly instead of being drawn into the hypnotic state I can be pulled out of it by lyrics or guitar. However, when played at low levels I find it conducive to stimulating the hypnotic trance where I'm completely absorbed in my writing.
This all may sound a bit hocus pocus to those who have never experienced the writer's trance, and a writer should hone his discipline to write under any variety of circumstances. However, utilizing these techniques can greatly increase a writer's productivity.

2012: What I've Done
Here's a quick review of writings that I managed to get published in 2012:
The fifth of my Dire Planet series recounting the adventures of marooned astronaut Garvey Dire was published in March from PulpWork Press. Available at Pulpwork.com, Amazon in hard copy, and Kindle, and Barnes and Noble in Epub.
In April Five Disciples was published in Low Noon, an anthology of Weird West tales. Five Disciples is a Lone Crow story. Lone Crow is an infamous Native American gunslinger who roamed the West (and a number of other places) and here we find him on the Barbary Coast hunting Shotgun Ferguson, a wanted killer. Throw in a witch and the Five Disciples of the Immortals and you get havoc and destruction on San Francisco's Telegraph Hill. Low Noon is available on Amazon in both hard copy and Kindle formats.
In August an 'All Martian Spectacular' of Science Fiction Trails contained yet another Lone Crow story, The Vanishing City. Crow accompanies Doctor Sylvia Conrad on an archeological expedition to Mount Shasta, investigating claims that an outpost of lost Lemuria has been discovered there. In the meantime, the infamous bounty hunters known as the Grim Brothers have gathered a motley crew of cutthroats and killers and are dogging his trail. This story has some loose tie-ins with my Dire Planet series.
This issue of Science Fiction Trails is available on Amazon in hard copy at $8.00 or for a $1.99 Kindle download. You can a 40% discount on a hard copy of Science Fiction Trails #9 by going to this link and entering the discount code of RMYAE97U.
In September my first foray into the land of Camelot was published. The brother knights Balin and Balan of North Umberland are only given a handful of pages in Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, but shamelessly pillaging the works of Malory I expanded their adventures into a full length novel. Some purists might complain that Merlin and Arthur aren't cast in the most favorable light in these pages (even as the villains of the piece) but I contend that a careful reading of Le Morte D'Arthur will confirm that they are less than virtuous and even downright despicable. Copies are available at Amazon (kindle $2.99, $13.95 hard copy), Barnes and Noble or direct from PulpWork Press (hard copy only) at a 20% discount if you punch in the semi-secret code of 5YRZ6A8W.
Also in September, after languishing for seven years at a less than desirable publishing house, the rights for my dark fantasy novel, Escape from Devil's Head, reverted to me. PulpWork Press put it back in print. This is the first of the Tales from the City of Bathos novels, the story which is told in a series of interconnecting short stories and novellas taking viewpoints of various denizens of the City of Corruption, where you'll find cutthroats, criminals, nameless cults, dire gods, alien entities and strangling politics--much like today. You can find this at Amazon in hard copy or digital or at Barnes and Noble in hard copy or digital. Find the hard copy at a 20% discount direct from PulpWork Press if you punch in the savings code of 5YRZ6A8W.
In November a third Lone Crow story was published in Gunslingers and Ghost Stories from Sci-Fi Trails. Old Mother Hennessy follows Lone Crow and his erstwhile companion-in-arms Six-Gun Susannah Johnson, the fastest (though perhaps not the most accurate) gun in the West. While running down some bounties they get caught between the vengeful dead and the murderous Hennessy Brothers who aim on adding Crow and Johnson to their graveyard of victims. You can find this at Amazon and Barnes and Noble in hard copy, Kindle and Ebook formats for just $3.55.
Rounding out the year is Lair of the White Apes, a Dire Planet short story, which is included in the December 2nd Annual PulpWork Christmas Special. You can find this at Amazon.com for $7.95. If you have an Amazon Prime membership the Kindle version is currently available at no charge, or if you don't have a membership the price is $2.99.
So in retrospect, it looks like I may have accomplished more writing than I thought. On a slightly different note, through no instigation of my own, I (or alter egos of myself) managed to appear in two different tales by two of the coolest pulp-writers alive. Yes, I'm talking about Josh Reynolds and Derrick Ferguson.
The first is The Matryoshka Affair featuring a pair of my favorite characters: The Ameriquetzlan ambassador Ulrich Popoca and, agent for the infamous Diogenes Club, the Countess Francesca Felluci. Another agent of the Diogenes Club named Jenkins narrowly escapes being killed. This is the second time that agent Jenkins has appeared in a Popoca story.
And on page 207 and 208 of Dillon and the Pirates of Xonira, by Derrick Ferguson, a roguish fellow by the name of Jenkins mouths off to Dillon's right hand man, Eli, when he's ordered to remove some limpet mines from the submarine Morgan Adams. Pick up a copy of Dillon and the Pirates of Xonira at the PulpWork Press website and get 20% off by using the 5YRZ6A8W code.
These appearances in Reynolds' and Ferguson's stories may be the closest I get to pulp immortality.
I wish you all a happy and productive 2013!

Mouthing Off to Dillon
One of the awesome things about being an author is the multi-million dollar royalty checks I receive in the mail...wait, that doesn't happen. The other awesome thing, which does actually happen, is that I get to chat with other authors, bounce ideas off of them and every once and awhile they are kind enough to immortalize me in print by tossing me into a story.
I've been lucky enough to appear as an agent of the Diogenes Club in the same story as Josh Reynolds' detective/ambassador Ulrich Popoca character (in two different stories!), and just recently a pair of rogues named Reynolds and Jenkins appear in Derrick Ferguson's Dillon and the Pirates of Xonira as part of the Morgan Adams submarine crew, which takes a cruise into pirate infested waters with a global instigator known as Dillon at the helm.
Most people with any sense wouldn't mouth off to Dillon or his right hand man Eli (page 207 and 208), but apparently I don't have any sense--and when I'm ordered to remove some limpet mines from the hull of the Morgan Adams I let Eli know what I think about it.

Dillon of the Dire Planet?
Prolific pulp author Barry Reese posits some possible team-ups from the New Pulp movement in a recent blog posting. Among these is Derrick Ferguson's adventurer Dillon being teamed up with ancient Mars as written in my Dire Planet books. A number of times I have referred to Dillon as a global instigator. If Barry Reese's wishful crossover were to come true, I guess I'd have to change my description to 'intergalactic instigator' or something along that lines.
I can't say I know of any plans for Dillon to visit the Dire Planet, but Dillon has teamed up/clashed with another of my characters--a certain rock guitarist and loose cannon named Slatko Gantlet (known as Sly Gantlet to all but a few). You can find this crossover in Four Bullets for Dillon or in the Gantlet Brothers: Greatest Hits collection.

Campfire on Kindle
How the West was Weird: Campfire Tales is now available on Kindle and in various other electronic formats at Smashwords. The cool thing is that it's only 99 cents!
Here's what's in it:
Four novellas combining the western with sci-fi and horror. This new addition to Pulpwork Press's best-selling HOW THE WEST WAS WEIRD series includes cowboys in a lost world, robot Pinkertons fighting sky pirates beside Teddy Roosevelt, and zombies - lots and lots of zombies.
CAMPFIRE TALES includes the following stories:
MR. BRASS AND THE CRIMSON SKIES OF KANSAS by Josh Reynolds. The robot Pinkerton is all that stands between President Teddy Roosevelt and an attack by sky pirates and Mr. Hyde.
HELL'S OWN by Russ Anderson. Zombies overrun a small western town, and the town's lone sheriff is the only one that's armed. Will anyone survive?
THE TALE OF THE BARON'S TRIBUTE by Derrick Ferguson. When a foe from Sebastian Red's past attacks him through his friends, Sebastian must undo the damage done to his loved ones and do battle with a foe who is, for once, in every way his equal.
GUNMEN OF THE HOLLOW EARTH by Joel Jenkins. Lone Crow, Doc Holliday, and Morgan Earp lead the surviving members of the Wild Bunch into a lost world at the center of the Earth, running afoul of dinosaurs, a tribe of barbarian women, and a posse of silver-hungry banditos who have followed them from the surface world.

The Dillon/Joel Jenkins Team Up
The hosts of the Pulped! podcast interview Derrick Ferguson about the mythical Dillon/Joel Jenkins team-up as well as his new Four Bullets for Dillon, which is 144 pages of action-packed coolness. It includes one story co-written by me which co-stars rock musician Sly Gantlet (not me--despite the assertions of the Pulped! hosts)

Four Bullets for Dillon
Four Bullets for Dillon is now available at Amazon:
A lost city in the Cambodian jungles run by a pint-sized tyrant wearing a gem-encrusted belt buckle; Beautiful women who lure Dillon and his rival, rock musician Sly Gantlet, into a clash of alpha males and a deadly set-up; a deceitful queen and a backstabbing friend; a quest for an evil artifact linked to the betrayer of Christ. Four Bullets for Dillon includes four hard to find and never before seen stories ripped from the life of global adventurer and instigator, Dillon.
Four Bullets includes a story, Dead Beat in La Esca, which I co-wrote with Derrick Ferguson. It's ten bucks at Amazon.com.
